Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the Great Migration river crossing?
+

The best time to witness the dramatic Mara River crossings is from July to October 2026. Peak crossing months are typically August and September when the largest herds of wildebeest and zebras gather at the river. However, crossing events can happen anytime during these months depending on rainfall, herd movements, and grazing patterns. Our expert guides monitor herd positions daily to position you at the best vantage points.

What are my chances of seeing a river crossing?
+

During the peak season (July-October), your chances of witnessing a river crossing are extremely high at 85-95%. We strategically schedule 2 full days in Northern Serengeti near the Mara River to maximize your opportunities. Our guides use radio communication with other safari vehicles to track herd movements and rush to crossing points when activity begins. While nature cannot be 100% guaranteed, we position you for the best possible experience.

What type of vehicle is used for the safari?
+

We use custom-built 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for optimal wildlife viewing and photography. Each vehicle has maximum 6 window seats, ensuring everyone gets an excellent view. Vehicles are equipped with coolers for drinks, charging ports for electronics, reference guidebooks, a pair of binoculars per person, and VHF radios for communication between guides to track river crossing activity.

What are the accommodation options during the migration safari?
+

We offer luxury lodge options in each location. In Tarangire: Ngare Lodge, Jungle Pearl Camp, or Ang'ata Tarangire. In Serengeti (Central & North): Shuhudia Camp, Sound of Silence Lodge, or Ang'ata Serengeti. In Ngorongoro area: Karatu Villager Lodge, Ngorongoro Safari Lodge, or Ang'ata Ngorongoro. All accommodations include full board meals, comfortable beds with en-suite bathrooms, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Is this safari suitable for children?
+

Yes, this safari is family-friendly! Children aged 6 and above are welcome. We offer special rates for children (contact us for details). Our vehicles are safe for kids, and our guides are experienced with family groups. The migration spectacle is particularly exciting for children. However, please note that long game drives (6-8 hours) may be tiring for very young children. We recommend discussing your family's needs when booking.

What photography equipment should I bring?
+

For river crossing photography, we recommend: DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens (200-500mm or longer), extra batteries and memory cards (you'll take hundreds of photos), a beanbag or window mount for stability, and a zoom lens for wider landscape shots. River crossings happen quickly, so practice fast focusing. Smartphones with zoom can also capture decent memories, but for professional results, bring proper gear.

What should I pack for the migration safari?
+

Essential items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, tan - no bright colors), warm layers for early morning game drives (temperatures can drop to 50°F/10°C), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen 30+ SPF), comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, personal medications, binoculars, camera gear, and a reusable water bottle. Luggage should be soft-sided bags (max 15kg/33lbs) as hard suitcases don't fit well in safari vehicles.

What is included in the tour price?
+

The price includes: full board accommodation (all meals), 4x4 safari vehicle with professional driver-guide, all park entry fees, crater service fees, unlimited game drives, bottled water during safari, and airport transfers. Excluded: international flights, visa fees (available on arrival for most nationalities - $50-100), travel insurance, tips for your guide ($20-30 per day recommended), alcoholic beverages, and optional activities like hot air balloon safari ($599).

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
+

Most nationalities can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). The visa costs $50-100 USD per person depending on nationality (US citizens pay $100). You'll need cash USD, a passport valid for at least 6 months, and a return ticket. Alternatively, you can apply for an e-visa online before travel. We recommend checking with your local Tanzanian embassy for the latest requirements.

Is travel insurance required?
+

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all our safaris. Your policy must cover emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation/interruption, lost baggage, and medical expenses. Tanzania has excellent private clinics in Arusha, but emergency evacuation from remote Serengeti can be expensive (up to $5,000-10,000). We can recommend insurance providers if needed. Please bring a copy of your insurance policy details with emergency contact numbers.
